The Prairie Winds program is a coordinated effort by electric cooperatives in the Missouri River Basin area. Wind power is being produced using large wind turbines which are located near Chamberlain, South Dakota and Minot, North Dakota. Electricity generated by the Prairie Winds turbines will be fed into the overall power supply system. Because the wind power is integrated into the system, there is no interruption of your power if the wind does not blow. Woodbury County Rural Electric Cooperative began offering the Prairie Winds green energy program in November 2002.
We would like to thank those members who are participating in this program and also remind other members of the opportunity to join the Prairie Winds program. This program allows individual customers to voluntarily contribute to the development of alternate energy production facilities. Alternate energy production facilities may include wind energy, biomass, solar and other nontraditional generation technologies. All of the money collected from customers participating in the green pricing program will be used to develop or support alternate energy production facilities.
Through this program customers will not be directly purchasing alternate energy but rather participating in the development or support of these resources. Your participation ensures that purchases will be made from alternate energy production facilities for delivery into the system of the Cooperative’s power supplier; but Woodbury County REC cannot ensure that the electrons purchased will be utilized to meet your individual energy needs.
